You can't exchange private messages until both recipient and sender have the other person's public key. Tiger Envelopes makes exchanging keys easier than exchanging telephone numbers, because it happens automatically.
When both you and the other person use Tiger Envelopes you don't need to know any details about importing and exporting keys, the algorithms, encryption keyrings, etc. All of those technical issues are handled for you.
Tiger Envelopes sends your public key with every message automatically. And, whenever a message arrives in your mailbox from another Tiger Envelopes user, their key is added automatically to your list of other people's public keys.
Regardless how you exchange keys, you should always verify the key with the other person before you trust the message was really from them.
