Mission Versions Benefits FAQ
Ordinary email is as exposed as a postcard. Anyone can read it. Encryption is the answer, but it's so much hassle that even pros usually don't use it. What we need is something as easy as envelopes, but for email. That's what Tiger Envelopes is. You keep reading and writing mail the way you always have, but now it's private. There's no need to change your mail client. There are no extra steps. It's easier than paper mail, because Tiger puts your message in the envelope for you.
Everyone can run Envelopes. It supports Windows, Mac, and Linux. Installation is super simple. With one click it sets up your encryption and configures Outlook, Outlook Express, Mac Mail or KMail for you.
Some technical details
Tiger Envelopes is a personal mail proxy that automatically encrypts and decrypts using standard programs such as GPG, Bouncy Castle, and PGP. The Open Crypto Engine, also developed by Tiger Privacy, provides a simple API that works with different OpenPGP encryption programs. All open source, of course.Bouncy Castle is included so there's nothing else you have to install. But if you already have GPG or PGP, then Envelopes will encrypt your messages in layers. Each nested envelope is provided by a different encryption program. To crack your message, an attacker has to crack all the layers. A vulnerability in one encryption program doesn't compromise the message. If any of them works, your message is safe.
Key management is automatic. Tiger creates, distributes, imports, and exports keys for you. You just read and write mail as always. There's also a Control Panel that you may never need, but it's ready if you want to verify a key's fingerprint, run tests, or change your configuration.
Making private email easy. There's a tradeoff between ease of use and security. For too many years some security professionals have said any privacy that's not perfect is worse than worthless. They say it creates a false sense of security.
No one has a false sense of security about envelopes. They're made of paper. But we know they're much more private than messages without envelopes, such as postcards or email.
Tiger gives you envelopes for your email.
Tiger Envelopes comes in two versions, Free and Business.Tiger Free Envelopes is free in both senses, gratis and libre. It is released under the GPL.
Tiger Business Envelopes is commercial. It's based on Tiger Free Envelopes and adds support plus advanced features businesses need. Source code is included for security audits, but it's not GPL.
